On Sunday, DJ Maphorisa, a well-known Amapiano producer and club DJ, was taken into custody for allegedly physically assaulting his girlfriend, Thuli Phongolo. Phongolo reported the incident at the Sandton Police Station, providing details of the incident.
The alleged gender-based violence occurred at Phongolo’s residence in Sandton, where she used to act in ‘Generations: The Legacy,’ Johannesburg. According to a statement obtained by City Press, the altercation began when Phongolo confronted Maphorisa about a previous argument they had the night before.
The altercation apparently took place in front of others at an event where Maphorisa was expected to perform. While it is unclear whether the couple was meant to perform together, Phongolo’s statement indicates that they had an argument in front of others.

Phongolo’s statement revealed that she had sustained injuries to her chest, arms, right cheek, and neck, though it’s unclear what sparked the altercation. Sources suggest that the couple’s relationship had been facing issues for some time, with a source within the music industry disclosing that this wasn’t the first time they had a heated altercation.
In December, the couple had a quarrel over infidelity allegations, and another fight reportedly occurred last month, but it was not reported to the police. DJ Maphorisa is set to appear in court on Monday at the Randburg Magistrates’ Court on charges of assault.

It is unclear whether DJ Maphorisa and Thuli Phongolo were meant to perform together, but according to Phongolo’s statement, the argument between them began in front of other people.
Phongolo claimed that when she confronted Maphorisa, he reacted aggressively and slapped her in the face. She further stated that he continued to physically abuse her after the initial assault. In her statement, Phongolo provided a detailed account of the incident, stating that Maphorisa became violent and started hitting her chest with his fists.
She told the authorities that he took her to the balcony, seizing her neck aggressively. He repeatedly struck her with his elbow during their struggle for her phone, which he had confiscated.
Thuli recounted that after he handed her the phone, she immediately called her manager, who drove her to the police station to report the domestic violence incident.
According to the police who witnessed her on her way to the station, Phongolo suffered severe bruises on her neck.

While it is uncertain what led to the argument, insiders suggest that the couple has been experiencing significant difficulties in their relationship.

The insider revealed that they had a confrontation in early December after allegations of infidelity and another last month, which did not result in a police report.
