Dave Hughes reveals shock injury caused by removing his sock

Dave Hughes has been left wearing a splint on his finger after an unfortunate incident with a sock.

The radio host and comedian dislocated his digit while removing the footwear, leaving his hand mangled. 

The 52-year-old shared a photo of his bent finger to Instagram Stories, before he went to see a doctor about the injury. 

Later, Dave headed home from treatment with his pointer finger wrapped in a black splint, which he will need to use for some time while he heals. 

‘Who would think taking off a sock would lead to a two month splint?’ he wrote on Instagram.

‘Thanks to the Concorde doctor who rang @hughesyedanderin this morning to warn me of the dangers of “mallet finger”. Hoping to now avoid “swan neck finger,”‘ he added. 

Mallet finger rerefers to deformity of the finger which is usually caused by injury, leading to the finger to droop and remain crooked. 

A swan neck deformity is when the joint closest to the fingertip is permanently bent toward the palm, which can also be the result of an injury like Dave’s being left untreated or not properly tended to. 

Dave admitted on his Hughesy, Ed & Erin radio show that he had waited nine days to see a doctor about his bent finger. 

‘It was just a normal sock. You know how you stand to take it off. I was standing up, one foot up, take the sock off, flick,’ he explained of how the incident happened.

‘[I thought] “Hang on, what’s happened there?” End of the finger has gone skewed. It’s a concerning for my overall life. Is my body falling apart?’ he added. 

Surprisingly, Dave is not the only one of his friends and fans who has dislocated their finger by pulling off footwear. 

‘I’ve had that! Did it taking my leggings off’ wrote comedian Cal Wilson in Dave’s Instagram comments. 

‘Happened to my hubby, all the best’ chimed in one of his fans while another added, ‘This happened to me a few months ago! Excruciating.’
