Ed Sheeran‘s recently set a MetLife Stadium attendance record with nearly 90,000 fans packing into the venue during Sunday night’s concert.

The British pop star played two nights at the venue in East Rutherford, New Jersey. home of NFL’s New York Jets and New York Giants, on June 10 and 11.

A representative for MetLife confirmed to People that Sheeran played to 89,106 people on Sunday, thus booting out U2 as the recorder-holder after bringing in 88,491 fans during their 360° Tour in 2011.

In recognition of the record-breaking performance, the stadium displayed a message on screens that read, ‘Congratulations, Ed Sheeran,’ right after the show.

Overall, the singer’s two MetLife shows tallied 173,390 fans at the venue, resulting in a box office gross of a whopping $18 million.

‘Played my biggest ever USA show today and broke the ticket record at MetLife,’ the Halifax, West Yorkshire, England native, 32, shared on Instagram right after the June 11 performance.

‘I really don’t take this for granted, my dad told me if you can make it in New York you can make it anywhere, and today was really reminiscing about playing my first show at mercury lounge in 2012 to 130 people. It feels like a dream today. I love you all.’

The British musician’s ongoing  +–=÷× Tour (translated to Mathematics) kicked-off  Dublin, Ireland on April 23, 2022, and went on through September of last year.

Shifting to New Zealand and Australia, the tour resumed in 2023 with the second leg from February 2 to March 12.

Leg number three saw Sheeran make his way to North America for a series of stadium shows, beginning with New Orleans on April 29.

That date would lead to the record-breaking concerts at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

On Friday, the Happier crooner made his way to Canada for a show in History.

‘I’m back in Canada,’ the Perfect star announced in an Instagram Stories post on Friday, just hours before he was to take the stage in History

Sheeran is now gearing up for his two night at Rogers Centre in Toronto, Canada over the weekend. 

He will also make stops in cities including Detroit, Nashville, Chicago, Seattle, among others, before wrapping the tour at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California on September 23.

While he has been focused mainly on stadiums for the tour, Sheeran has also made a point of hitting the stage at smaller venues, to mix it up with intimate performances.
