Manchester United could be about to launch a raid on rivals Chelsea.

Manchester United want Newcastle United’s Dan Ashworth as their new sporting director and he is keen to bring in Kyle Macaulay from Chelsea, according to The Sun.

Macaulay is currently the Blues’ chief analyst, arriving at Stamford Bridge with Graham Potter in 2022.

United have to get Ashworth in from Newcastle first, though, and that does not look like it is going to be an easy job.

As per The Athletic, the Magpies are demanding a £20m fee for their sporting director, who has now been put on gardening leave.

Kyle Macaulay could leave Chelsea for Manchester United

It looks like Macaulay could move to United if the Manchester club can agree a deal with Newcastle for Ashworth.

If you are a Chelsea fan, you probably are not too concerned about that. The Blues will not be losing a player or their manager to one of their rivals, but rather an analyst.

There are a lot of important figures in Chelsea’s recruitment team, including co-sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley. It is hard to tell how much of a say and influence Macaulay actually has on transfers. Would it really be a blow if the club lost him? Probably not.

As long as the Blues can continue recruiting individuals like Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto, they will be fine.

Both players are young and have been exceptional for Chelsea this season. The former is the team’s top scorer, while the latter has come in and covered for Reece James well in the right-back’s absence.

Jason Cundy was quick to praise him following Chelsea’s 1-1 draw with Manchester City at the Etihad on Saturday.

If Macaulay had a big say in the duo coming to Stamford Bridge, then the club are going to have a bit of a problem if he departs for United.
