A couple of Chelsea players have really enhanced their profiles after making a lot of noise at Euro 2024.

Cole Palmer, for example, proved that he can do it on the biggest stage after scoring in the European Championship final.

Marc Cucurella also delivered in that final, setting up Spain’s winner as they went on to win the trophy at England’s expense.

He came in for a lot of criticism last season. Frank Leboeuf was hard on Cucurella, the Chelsea legend himself has admitted.

But if the left-back replicates his form at the Euros at Stamford Bridge in the new campaign, then the above will not happen this time around. His form in Germany, though, should concern Ben Chilwell.

Who will be Chelsea’s first-choice left-back under Enzo Maresca, Marc Cucurella or Ben Chilwell?

Since signing for Chelsea from Leicester City in a £50m deal four years ago, Chilwell has been the first-choice left-back for most of his time in west London.

However, he has picked up a lot of injuries. And while sidelined last term, Cucurella managed to get into the Chelsea team and stay there.

The 25-year-old never looked back and based on his time in the side and at the Euros, it would be a surprise if Chilwell was preferred over his teammate.

He will be sweating over his place, but his long-term future at the club also appears to be in doubt this summer.

Ben Chilwell could leave Chelsea during this transfer window

Last month, it was claimed that Chelsea could sell Chilwell or Cucurella. At this moment in time, the former looks like the less valuable player to the Blues.

In terms of potential destinations, Manchester United are interested in Chilwell, it has been reported.

Chilwell and Cucurella are the two natural left-backs in Chelsea’s squad, so it makes sense to keep hold of both of them this summer. But if the club are to sell one, then it should probably be the former.

It is really important, then, for the 27-year-old to have a good pre-season. That means staying fit, something that Chilwell has struggled to do in recent years.
