And club captain Gundogan was named in the list of those that will be heading out the Etihad door when his deal expires at the end of the month.

Though it remains to be seen whether he will actually depart as the 32-year-old remains locked in contract talks with the Citizens.

Arsenal have been linked with securing the Germany international’s services, while Barcelona have also been credited with an interest.

Gundogan enjoyed a stunning season for City as he hit double digits in terms of goals for the third consecutive campaign.

In total he chipped in with 11 goals and seven assists from 51 outings – with two of his strikes coming in the 2-1 FA Cup final win over Manchester United.

Joining Gundogan on the City release list is left-back Benjamin Mendy, who joined from Monaco for £52million in 2017.

The French World Cup winner was suspended by his club in August 2021 after he was charged with rape.

In January, the 28-year-old was found not guilty of six counts of rape and one of sexual assault following a six-month trial at Chester Crown Court.

But jurors could not reach verdicts on one count of rape and one of attempted rape.

He will face a retrial on those counts on June 26.

Along with Gundogan and Mendy, youth prospects Terrell Agyemang and Rowan McDonald have also been released.
