DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. (TCD) — A 65-year-old man has been found guilty of killing his 48-year-old friend in 2022 over money the victim owed.

According to DeKalb County District Attorney Sherry Boston, on Monday, March 18, following a bench trial, a judge found Rickey Carter guilty of malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony in connection with the death of his friend, Quinlan Parker. The judge subsequently sentenced Carter to serve life in prison plus an additional five years.

On Jan. 28, 2022, DeKalb County Police officers responded to an apartment on Maypop Lane, where they found Parker dead from an apparent gunshot wound to his chest. During an interview, the victim’s wife reportedly said Carter, Parker’s “longtime friend,” knocked on the door, and she let him in. Prosecutors said Carter and Parker got into an argument over $35 Parker had borrowed a few weeks prior.

Parker’s stepdaughter reportedly heard yelling, so she exited her room and recorded the argument on her cellphone. According to the district attorney’s office, Parker’s wife told police Carter took out a handgun and she heard a gunshot. Carter reportedly insisted he shot the victim in self-defense. However, the cell phone video revealed Parker “backing away from Carter before he opened fire,” prosecutors said.
