With the campaign now in May, it is awards season and Chelsea’s Cole Palmer should be in contention for quite a few accolades.
Cole Palmer has already won the Chelsea Player of the Year and the Players’ Player of the Year awards.
However, he has been good enough this season to be in the conversation for other honours, such as the Premier League Player of the Season and PFA Player of the Year accolades.
The attacker has been terrific for Chelsea in the current campaign, coming up with 37 goal contributions in 42 appearances.
One award Palmer will not be winning, though, is the Football Writers’ Footballer of the Year accolade, which has just gone to his former Manchester City teammate Phil Foden.
Palmer has had a terrific campaign, but one pundit would actually put two players above the 22-year-old.
When asked on ESPN FC should Palmer win the Premier League Player of the Season accolade, former USA international Janusz Michallik said: “He’s been absolutely sensational, but if you go sort of like-for-like if you will, I wouldn’t.
“I’d give it to [Martin] Odegaard if I had to choose right now, easy decision for me. Obviously Palmer is very, very young and that may change for me. I’d even give it to [Bukayo] Saka before I give it to him. So no.”
Odegaard and Saka have also impressed this term, helping Arsenal to challenge for the title.
Who will win Premier League Player of the Season?
In all likelihood, the Premier League Player of the Season is probably going to come from either Arsenal or Manchester City.
The fact that the likes of Odegaard, Saka, Foden and Rodri have helped their respective sides in the title race will not be overlooked.
Compared to Saka and Foden, though, Palmer leads the way when it comes to goals and assists.
Had Chelsea been in the title race, he probably would have bagged the award, but you cannot help but feel that it is going to go to Foden, especially if City do go on to win the Premier League.
