Two people ‒ believed to be the mother and partner ‒ are facing charges following an investigation by police in New Zealand after two siblings suffered “horrific” injuries two weeks ago.

A woman and a man face charges of wounding, failing to protect children under 18, and obstruction of justice, ill-treatment of an animal along with drugs charges.

They are due to appear in the Hutt Valley District Court today.

Police confirmed a 25-year-old man had been charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, wilful ill treatment of a dog, attempting to pervert the course of justice and selling cannabis and cultivating cannabis.

They were at their new home just two nights before they were hospitalised, Detective Senior Sergeant Rebecca Cotton said.

“Their injuries were so extensive one required surgery, and it has taken weeks to understand the full extent of damage to their bodies,” Cotton said.

On Monday a member of the public came forward with information that contributed to the investigation.

Cotton said the family of the two kids were co-operating to varying degrees, with police believing some knew more information.

These charges follow two search warrants executed at different addresses in the Hutt Valley on Wednesday.

“We are elated to be able to share this news and recognise the genuine concern and outrage from the community that has gotten us here,” Cotton said.

“This result cannot be attributed to any one thing – a number of enquiries have taken place over the past week culminating in interviews with the two people that have been charged yesterday afternoon.

“Our priorities have been twofold – ensuring those responsible for the harm these two children have suffered are put before the court, and the ongoing welfare of these two siblings.”
