Police have released CCTV as they investigate the fatal shooting of a 28-year-old man in south-west Sydney last year.

Ferenc “David” Stemler was shot dead on Brought Street in Canterbury about 2am on July 27.

Detectives have now released CCTV with the hope witnesses will come forward with more information.

The footage shows a white Lexus, allegedly stolen in July last year, arriving at a Casula Central carpark about 10.25pm on July 18.

Police believe the driver of the Lexus allegedly lay in wait for the planned shooting, which was seen being “checked on” by a black hatchback on July 20 and again by a dark-coloured hatchback on July 24.

The Lexus’ lights are seen flashing. Police said it appeared the key was being tested.

On July 26 a white Commodore, believed to be stolen, is seen entering the car park via Pine Road and then leaving in convoy with the Lexus just before 9.50pm.

Police said both cars travelled to the car park of a townhouse a short distance down the road, where the drivers lay in wait for about three hours.

At 1.04am on July 27 the cars are seen exiting the M5 Motorway at Bexley Road in Kingsgrove.

Additional CCTV captures the moment Stemler approaches the commodore outside his Broughton Street home before being fatally shot.

Police believe the meeting was arranged.

After the attack, the Lexus and a dark hatchback are seen in Casula before the Lexus used in the shooting was set alight.

Police previously reported Stemler had links to organised crime but was not a “major player” in Sydney’s underworld.

They said there was no suggestion of his involvement in organised crime in particular, and that he was a local man who “grew up with a number of people in the area”.
