A driver in an allegedly stolen taxi has been charged after he was caught waiting in a McDonald’s drive thru.

A man hailed a cab on King William Street in Adelaide’s CBD about 4am, asking to go to Hindley Street. 

He then got inside, allegedly hit the driver on his shoulder and forced him out of the car.

The taxi was tracked using its GPS to McDonald’s on Main North Road in Pooraka, where the alleged offender was in the fast food line waiting to order.

Police arrested the 36-year-old man and charged him with illegal use, assault and property damage.

Taxi Council SA President John Trainer condemned the alleged attack, warning offenders that they will be caught.

“This is another disgusting mongrel act against someone who is very vulnerable out there, on their own working in the early hours of the morning, providing a public service,” he told 9News.

“You will be caught, there is a security camera watching you in the car and recording everything and you have satellite navigation that will follow the car.”

The 36-year-old was refused bail and will face court tomorrow.
