A man has been arrested after breaking into a property in Brisbane, standing on the roof of the house triggering a nine-hour police standoff.
Police said when they arrived at the scene In Keperra, in the city’s north, they found a man on the roof who was “obviously in an agitated state”.
Police, ambulance and fire services attended the scene for hours while neighbours were evacuated or told to stay in their homes.Â
Police Inspector Andrew Tracey said the man “was armed with two large knives, which then makes that a dangerous situation for police”.
Neighbour Michael Gaffe said it was “pretty scary for suburban northern Brisbane”.
Other neighbours who spoke to 9News said the man had jumped the fences of other properties before ending up on the roof of a stranger’s house.
Charlie Hurren said the man “ended up ripping up the tiles off the roof of the house and getting into the roof cavity of the house”.
“The poor owner was away up in Cairns,” he said.
Residents were told to leave their homes or remain locked down inside.
After several hours of negotiations, the man came down from the roof before he was arrested.
