A 63-year-old man has been charged with murder after an argument over a pack of cigarettes allegedly led to a fatal stabbing in Far North Queensland overnight.
Police attended a home on Melaleuca Street in the Cairns suburb of Manunda about 8.15pm where they found a 62-year-old with a single stab wound to the neck.

Officers commenced first aid before paramedics arrived but he died at the scene.

Detective Acting Inspector Jason Chetham said the pair had been drinking liquor heavily throughout the day.

“We understand there was an argument over a packet of cigarettes throughout the course preceding that event,” he said.

“No one else was involved in the offence…there was another witness at the scne and we’ve taken a statement from that individual.”

Chetham said a kitchen knife was recovered at the scene.

A 63-year-old Manunda was arrested and charged with murder.

He is due to appear at Cairns Magistrates Court today.
