Two officers were conducting traffic duties at the intersection of Castlereagh and Park Streets in the CBD yesterday, when a male constable was approached from behind by a man shortly after 1pm.
The man allegedly stabbed the officer in the head with a knife.
The man allegedly fled and was pursued by the injured officer and a female constable along Park Street and into Hyde Park, with officers directing the man to drop the knife.
The officers confronted the man in the park. He was allegedly still armed with a knife, and was tasered when more police arrived.
Constable Elvis Poa, 35, was treated for two wounds to his head.
He was taken to hospital, where scans revealed he suffered two skull fractures.
Poa remains in a stable condition.
A 34-year-old man was arrested and taken to hospital under police guard, for assessment.
After he was released from hospital, he was charged with cause wounding/grievous bodily harm to person with intent to murder.
He was refused bail and will appear in court today.
