A man has been hospitalised with serious injuries after a gunman opened fire on a residential street in Melbourne‘s south-east.
Families were forced to take shelter during the incident on Fifth Avenue, Dandenong, around 5.30am today.
Police said a man in his 20s was struck and taken to The Alfred hospital’s intensive care unit with serious injuries.
Officers believe the attackers knew the victim, who 9News understands is not cooperating with police.
It’s understood a fight broke out in front of a funeral home between seven people before a shotgun was fired twice.
The alleged perpetrators fled from the scene.
Multiple locals witnessed the altercation, which has left the neighbourhood shaken.
Pellets from the shotgun ricocheted off witness Ali Akbar’s cars.
Akbar told 9News his friend wanted to go outside but he warned him not to, fearing he might get shot.
The gunman also opened fire just metres away from Dandenong resident Junior’s sleeping children.
“The last thing we want is hearing something like this happening,” Junior, who did not want to disclose his surname, told 9News.
“It just feels unsafe there.
“Hopefully they catch them soon and eliminate these kinds of people and these kinds of crimes.”
Detectives have spent the day scouring the street along with a motel across the road.
