Police have charged a man over a pursuit with two children sitting unrestrained in the back of a car.

Officers tried to pull over the Holden Commodore sedan in Ascot just after midnight yesterday and the 30-year-old driver allegedly sped off.

The car then allegedly ran a red light on Hardey Road in Belmont.

The 30-year-old driver was charged with a string of offences, including endangering lives. (Nine)

The speed limit is 60km/h but police said the driver was doing double that.

A fire extinguisher was allegedly sprayed out the driver’s window towards officers who attempted to stop the vehicle.

The pursuit ended after the vehicle crashed into a fence on the corner of Hardey Road and Chester Street. 

Five passengers, including an eight-year-old and a six-year-old, were allegedly without their seatbelts on.

The driver allegedly left them behind and jumped over a fence, where police found him hiding in a backyard. 

The 30-year-old driver was charged with a string of offences, including endangering lives.
