Never-before-seen video has shed new light on a Gold Coast police officer’s desperate struggle with an offender in an attempted arrest.
A body cam captured her piercing screams as she wrestled the larger man, who kept coming at her even after she fired her Taser.
The footage was played in court today as Noah Spells was sentenced for the assault and dozens of other offences.
The attempted arrest at Parkwood in December was also filmed from across the street, in footage aired at the time by 9News.
It started when locals called police reporting a stolen car and Spells was found in the driver’s seat.
“Get out. Get out of the f—ing car, now,” the officer yells, in the body cam footage, which was broadcast for the first time today.
Spells eventually gets out but lunges at the officer, who fires her Taser, sending the 40-year-old to the ground.
She can be seen holding his wrist and telling him to get down before he lunges at her again.
Heavily intoxicated, he manages to overpower the officer, pulling her hair and punching her, then running into nearby bushes.
Backup arrived soon after, finding a case of ammunition and a homemade firearm inside the stolen car.
Eventually they arrested Spells and the injured officer was taken to hospital for cuts and bruising.
Spells’ excuse for the attack was that he wasn’t in the right headspace.
He was ordered to spend two years behind bars and will be eligible for release by the middle of next year thanks to time already served.
