Man who tried to break into car dies in fight after a ‘short scuffle’ with residents who confronted him

A man has died while two others have been questioned following a brawl sparked by an attempted car burglary.

Police were called to Craigieburn in Melbourne‘s north on Wednesday afternoon following reports of a man attempting to break into a car.

The man was confronted by residents which triggered a physical altercation.

The man was arrested when police arrived and was treated by paramedics but became unresponsive and died at the scene.

Two men aged 33 and 72 were arrested at the scene and were questioned by police before later being released the next morning  pending further inquires.

No charges have yet been laid. 

‘Police are awaiting the results of a post mortem to determine cause of death,’ a statement read.

Hothlyn Drive was cordoned off and declared a crime scene as police launched an investigation into the incident.

Detectives and forensic officers remained at the scene for much of Wednesday night.

A blue car parked near where the man died remained at the scene on Thursday morning.
