Vile paedophile who once ran for Scott Morrison’s seat before he was locked up for paying a young girl in the Philippines to send him sexual videos WINS appeal to have his jail time slashed

  • Jonathan Peter Doig was a Greens candidate
  • Paedophile was jailed in 2021 for nine years
  • The sentence has been reduced to seven years

A former Greens candidate jailed after paying to watch the ‘real-time’ sexual abuse of a child in the Philippines has won his appeal and had his sentenced slashed.

Just months after the 2019 election, where Jonathan Peter Doig ran against Scott Morrison in Cook, the veteran political activist began transferring money overseas to a 13-year-old girl and two others.

The then-57-year-old sent money for about four months before initiating a conversation with the girl over Facebook Messenger in December that year.

The court heard that the child would message Doig about money for school, appointments, living expenses, or food for her family. He would then demand sexual videos and images in return for the cash.

In December 2021, the paedophile was sentenced to nine years jail with a minimum non-parole period of five years and six months by Judge Gina O’Rourke.

But Doig appealed his sentence in the NSW Court of Appeal earlier this year, arguing it was ‘manifestly excessive’.

A judgment handed down this week by Justices Robert Beech-Jones, Peter Garling and Dina Yehia, described the offending as an ‘appalling’ case of predatory conduct.

But they found both the sentence and non-parole period was excessive, instead jailing Doig for seven years and six months with a minimum term of four years and six months.

The paedophile has his total sentence slashed by a year and a half.

At the time of his offending, the aspiring politician was a software engineer employed at the University of New South Wales.

Just days before his arrest by AFP officers on June 10, 2020, he recorded three video calls with the child, totalling about 19 minutes, where he directed her sexual activity.

In one of the videos, when the girl moves her body close to the camera, Doig can be seen performing a ‘licking motion’ multiple times on the screen.

He was sentenced on four charges; procuring a child to engage in sexual activity, possessing child abuse material, persistent sexual abuse of a child outside Australia and causing abuse material to be transmitted.

In her remarks, Judge O’Rouke found he had manipulated the child and used her desperate need for money to satisfy his ‘pathetic and disgraceful’ sexual desires.

‘The offender clearly and abhorrently exploited the vulnerability of the child and her impoverished circumstances in the Philippines,’ she said.

‘During the course of each video call, (the child) engages in sexual activity whilst the offender watched in real-time.

‘On multiple occasions the offender used either words, actions and/or speech to direct what he wanted her to do.’

He will be eligible for parole in June 2026.
