SNP meltdown gathers pace as poll finds number of MPs could HALVE at election and backing for independence languishes at 47%
The SNP meltdown appears to be gathering pace with a poll suggesting the party could lose half its MPs at the general election.
Research by Survation put the nationalists’ support for a Westminster contest at 37 per cent, down a point on two months ago. Meanwhile, Labour was up three on 34 per cent and the Tories were on 17 per cent.
According to Electoral Calculus and factoring in mooted new boundaries, that result would slash the number of SNP seats from 48 to 24.
In another grim sign for new leader Humza Yousaf, backing for independence is also languishing at 47 per cent.

The SNP has been sustaining huge political damage from the chaos over its finances, and splits over issues such as gender identity rights and how to approach independence.
Mr Yousaf has also been frantically downgrading expectations for the general election, due next year.
Nicola Sturgeon called for the contest to be a ‘de facto referendum’ on independence after the Supreme Court ruled she could not hold one without Westminster approval.
The suggestion was that the SNP winning more than 50 per cent of votes would count as a mandate for splitting the UK.
However, Mr Yousaf is now claiming that the nationalists getting ‘the most’ MPs is the threshold.
That could be achieved with a minority of the overall vote, and has been derided by other parties.
The SNP’s advantage in the Survation polling, carried out last month, is the lowest recorded since 2020.
In terms of Holyrood, for the list vote the SNP was down three on 30 per cent and Labour up by the same number on 29 per cent.
The nationalists had 38 per cent support on Holyrood constituencies, compared to 33 per cent for Labour.
