Why this public pool’s controversial dress code about what is ‘appropriate swimwear’ is sparking intense backlash: ‘It’s like the 1920s’

A public swimming pool has copped vitriol after telling patrons what swimwear they are allowed to wear at its facilities.

The Marion Outdoor Pool in Adelaide‘s south re-posted its rules on social media last Friday, which said management had the right to remove guests who did not follow the regulations.

The permitted swimwear was listed as a ‘rashie or a sun smart top that is non-transparent’, ‘board shorts or Speedos’, a ‘one piece, tankini, swimskirt or modest swimwear’ or a ‘standard bikini’.

The notice, which was originally posted in 2021, showed animated pictures of men, women and children wearing the accepted swimmers.

‘Management reserves the right to remove people from the pool if the above appropriate swimwear is not adhered to,’ the post read.

‘Please have fun and consider others.’

But social media users slammed the post claiming the pool managers were going back to the ‘1920s’ by patrons need to cover up.

‘Seems like someone with religious affiliation/control issues has been given a position in charge and decided its 1920,’ one irate commenter said.

Another wrote: ‘You will lose business telling people what to wear! Seriously what is this world coming too?’

‘I know Marion is ‘in the south’, but do they realise we’re in Oz not in the US, we have a Labor Party and not Republican majority, and that women still have body autonomy?’

But some commenters hit back against the tirades with one saying, ‘it’s just about being appropriate in a family setting’.

‘Guessing those few didn’t see this before they visited [the pool] today! Brazilian bikini definitely not on the list as appropriate,’ one swimmer said.

Another wrote: ‘I’m guessing too many bottoms on show? Seems to be the trend at the beach at least.’

‘I find when I’m swimming laps that women in G-string bikinis swimming and climbing in and out of the pool quite disgusting,’ a third commented. ‘Just too much info for my eyes.’

‘So, women may be cautioned if they dare wear bikinis, but overweight ‘senior’ males can wear budgie smugglers without fear??’ said another.

The Marion Outdoor Pool was contacted by Daily Mail Australia for comment.
