Footage shows the moment a lionhearted terrier faced off with a surprise, furry guest lurking in woods outside his owner’s home.
Captured on May 11 in Connecticut, the frightening clip shows the tense interaction in full – with the principles being Dixie, an eight-year-old terrier mix, and a curious black bear.
Despite only weighing 20 pounds, Dixie held her own during the altercation, which happened unbeknownst to homeowner Julie Streich – that is until Dixie made a mad dash away from the beast, barking frantically along the way.
Inside the Farmington home, Streich, 52, heard Dixie’s cries – and immediately noticed them to be more alarming than usual. She proceeded to rush the residence’s side door to scoop the mutt – who, despite being scared stiff, was safe and sound.
Recounting the close call Monday, she described how she regularly lets Dixie out in the mornings, during which time the dog defends the house ‘by barking at anyone or anything that comes into our yard.’

However, this time around, she said Dixie’s constituted more of an ‘alarm/something-is-wrong’ bark – spurring her to make a mad dash to rescue her brazen best friend.
‘As I turned to go back inside the house with her, the momma bear poked her head up above the deck floor we were standing on,’ Streich told Storyful Monday, recalling Dixie’s run-in with what presumably was a protective female.
‘That’s when I knew just what had happened.’
She added: ‘I did not know Dixie had been chased by the bear until I had watched the surveillance video our backyard camera had caught.’
Refinancing the now viral clip that showed how the altercation happened, Streich said she is counting her lucky stars that Dixie is all right after seeing how close she came to meeting her maker – and that she was still home when it transpired.

It then shows the dog, who is heard barking throughout the minute-long, suddenly stop in his tracks after catching wind of the seen visitor, briefly growing silent before the bear emerges through the brush.
At that point, the dog’s barks grow noticeably more fearful – though Dixie is seen making a short-lived but commendable stand as the bear approaches before darting away.

Dixie, thankfully, escaped unscathed. As for Streich, she said she’ll think twice before she leaves her unattended – and is thankful nothing more serious came of the incident.
