Chelsea winger Raheem Sterling was meant to be the marquee signing who got the Todd Boehly era rolling.

Raheem Sterling cost Chelsea £50m and arrived from Manchester City as one of the best forwards in the Premier League.

The first signing under the club’s new ownership, the 29-year-old was expected to bring goals to Stamford Bridge but has just not been able to do that.

In his debut season as a Chelsea player, Sterling scored just six goals in 28 Premier League appearances and has a very similar record this term.

When the transfer window opens again in the summer, the Blues could make another big forward signing. And while he may not be the same profile of attacker as Sterling, Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez really can be the marquee player Boehly expected his first addition to be.

Are Chelsea actually interested in Lautaro Martinez?

While Martinez may not be at the very top of Chelsea’s shortlist right now, it does appear that the Blues hold some interest in him.

According to HITC, Chelsea could turn to the 26-year-old if they fail to land Napoli’s Victor Osimhen.

Osimhen has been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge for such a long time, with it being reported that the 2021 Champions League winners are going to go all out to sign him.

They are probably not going to give up on the Nigerian so easily, but if they have to eventually, then Martinez could be the perfect alternative.

In fact, maybe the Argentine should be the striker Chelsea prioritise going into the summer.

Why Chelsea should give serious thought to signing Lautaro Martinez

For the last few seasons now, Martinez has put up some really good numbers. For example, this term, the Inter talisman has scored 23 goals in Serie A, while in the previous campaign, he registered 21.

During the 2021/22 season, Martinez also netted on 21 occasions after making 35 league appearances.

He has truly become a prolific No.9. It is the kind of output Chelsea would have been hoping for Sterling to be near after what the England international managed to accomplish during his City days.

It has not worked out that way unfortunately and he is now being linked with a move to MLS.

How many of Chelsea’s big signings under Boehly and Clearlake Capital have actually excelled? Not many, otherwise the club would not be sitting in 11th place. Martinez, though, has the kind of track record that suggests he can be a success at Stamford Bridge if he is brought there in the summer.
