Chelsea defender Ian Maatsen had a very productive loan spell at Borussia Dortmund.

There, Ian Maatsen made 23 appearances and came up with five goal contributions.

It comes after the defender only managed to make one league start at Chelsea during the current campaign before his loan move to Borussia Dortmund back in January.

However, while Maatsen’s loan to the German club was a good one overall, it did not end well for the left-back.

Maatsen and Dortmund lost 2-0 to Real Madrid in the Champions League final on Saturday evening, with the Dutchman making a very costly error during the game.

Chelsea fans, taking an interest in their player, reacted to his performance.

Despite his mistake, there were supporters who were still impressed with Maatsen’s display, while some expressed their desire for him to return to the club.

Others, however, were not too convinced with what they saw.

One fan even went on to say Chelsea will only be getting 50p for Maatsen this summer!

What will happen with Ian Maatsen now the Champions League final is over?

Given that Maatsen was a first-team regular during his loan spell at Dortmund, you would imagine that the Netherlands U21 international would be happy to stay at Signal Iduna Park.

Everything suggests that the Bundesliga outfit also want to keep hold of the Chelsea man.

The reliable Fabrizio Romano claimed that Dortmund would make an offer for Maatsen after the Champions League final.

With that game having now been played, a bid could be imminent. Looking at what Maatsen has done in Germany this season, Chelsea should probably be keeping hold of him.

However, even if they wanted to, there is a bit of an issue now. It is believed that Maatsen has a £35m release clause in his contract, which gives him a way out of Stamford Bridge this summer.

It means Enzo Maresca, who has agreed to become the new Chelsea manager, will probably have to rely on Marc Cucurella and Ben Chilwell for the left-back position, rather than Maatsen.
