Chelsea have won their first silverware of the season with a new face lifting the trophy.
The Blues were victorious in the inaugural Premier League Series after securing a 2-0 victory over Fulham on Sunday in Washington DC.
But while the trophy itself might not be enough to get supporters excited about the potential glory coming their way, the sight of a potential new skipper might just do it.
Veteran defender Thiago Silva, who skippered the side in the first half, was on hand to lift the trophy however it was Reece James who held the captain’s armband at full-time and therefore lifted the club’s first piece of silverware in two years.
The England defender is a key man for the Blues having made 147 appearances for the club since becoming a first team regular in 2019.
As well as being a top performer on the pitch, the 23-year-old has emerged as a real leader in the Chelsea dressing room and a popular figure as well, making him one of the club’s natural leaders.
With Pochettino looking to build a team for the future, Chelsea’s supporters believe that the decision to give James the armband for the Premier League Series may just be a sign of things to come.
One fan wrote: “First trophy won by Reece James as Chelsea’s captain.”
Another said: “Think our new captain has been confirmed,” while a third added: “Give him the armband already.”
A number of fans simply tweeted: “My captain,” about the England full-back, while another said: “Reece James lifting a trophy wearing the captain’s armband – things you love to see.”
One final fan summed up the feeling rather well too, writing: “Worn the captain armband, won a trophy. Reece James y’all.”
