Eni Aluko and Ally McCoist have got differing opinions over Arsenal’s imminent signing of Kai Havertz.

The pair clashed on talkSPORT Breakfast on Tuesday as the Chelsea forward inches closer to a move to the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners agreed a £65million deal to sign the Germany international who joined Chelsea from Bayer Leverkusen in 2020.

Havertz has netted 32 goals in 139 appearances for the Blues, including his unforgettable winner in the 2021 Champions League final against Manchester City.

But Aluko has cast doubt on the impending transfer claiming the 24-year-old is not the type of signing Arsenal need to dethrone Pep Guardiola’s treble winners.

“Signing Kai Havertz, for me, I don’t really get it,” Aluko told talkSPORT. “Arsenal need to sign players that are going to make them win the Premier League.”

McCoist quickly jumped to the defence of the German saying: “Kai Havertz is one of them, I think he’s a great player.”

Aluko then questioned his goal return adding: “He scored seven goals last season.”

But former Ranger striker McCoist again leapt to the defence of Havertz and identified his versatility as a key factor for Mikel Arteta’s side next season.

McCoist continued: “He’s not a centre forward, I don’t care what anyone says he’s not a centre forward, never has been, never will be.

“He keeps coming towards the ball. I think in a forward area, and from a wide area they’ve already got Saka and Martinelli – different class.

“But he [Havertz] can play as a No.10 or in midfield. I actually think Havertz will be a great signing.”

Aluko had the final word on the matter claiming Arsenal need a goalscorer if they are to mount a credible title challenge next season – an opinion McCoist was in agreement with.

“He’s not a 20-25 goal a season player is he? He’s not going to be [Erling] Haaland but that’s what Arsenal need,” she said.
