Romelu Lukaku was booed by fans as he took to the pitch in the Champions League final before blocking an Inter Milan goal.

The Inter star was thrown straight into action after Edin Dzeko went down 10 minutes after half-time.

And Manchester City fans greeted the striker – as expected – with a chorus of boos due to his Manchester United past.

It might have come as a surprise to some not to see Lukaku in the starting line-up, with Simone Inzaghi preferring the experience of Dzeko instead.

But the Bosnian, who played for City, was ineffective and was taken straight off after he went down crocked on the pitch.

Lukaku played for United from 2017 to 2019 before joining Inter Milan after falling out of favour.

And the 30-year-old made a huge impact soon after coming on – though not in the way that he would have hoped for.

Federico Dimarco managed to find Manuel Akanji in trouble before trying to nod the ball over Ederson in the City net.

It hit the crossbar with the goalkeeper on the deck before Dimarco had another bite at the cherry.

But Lukaku was the wrong man in the wrong place as the ball hit him on the leg and rebounded away as the shot looked like it was going on target.

Speaking live on talkSPORT, ex-City manager Stuart Pearce said: “It was carnage in the box, Dimarco has thrown his whole body and Lukaku just couldn’t get out of the way.”

Ruben Dias was also present but there were no certainty that the centre-back would have got there on time.

It came moments after Rodri gave City the lead with a pulsating finish after a tense opening hour.

And the Lukaku block caused some reaction on social media, with Gary Lineker even chiming in.

The Match of the Day host sarcastically tweeted: “Brilliant block by Lukaku.”

Another wrote: “Romelu Lukaku with the own goal that saw Inter lose the Europa League final and the block to stop Inter’s equaliser in the Champions League final. Not ideal.”

And a third said with a series of laughing emojis: “LUKAKU BLOCKED A GOAL FOR HIS OWN TEAM.”
