This season is turning into one to forget for Chelsea winger Raheem Sterling.

He was recently booed off in one of their games, a 4-2 win against Leicester City in the FA Cup quarter-finals, after missing a penalty and blasting a free-kick into the stands.

TalkSPORT pundit Simon Jordan has really not been impressed with Raheem Sterling since he joined Chelsea from Manchester City back in 2022.

However, Liverpool legend Graeme Souness has come out to defend Sterling and has given his opinion on why he thinks the 29-year-old has struggled so much at Chelsea.

Souness also thinks that Sterling should go to the Euros with England despite having not played for his country since the 2022 World Cup.

Graeme Souness on Raheem Sterling’s Chelsea struggles

Having scored just six goals in the Premier League this season, it is fair to say that Chelsea supporters are not seeing the form that Sterling showed at City.

Souness, speaking on talkSPORT, has put that down to the team not performing as a whole.

On the England international, he said: “Because of what he’s done for England in the past, you take him to the Euros.

“The one thing defenders are absolutely terrified of is genuine pace. He’s got that. I think he’s suffered by being in a team that’s misfiring.”

Raheem Sterling needs to take mantle at Chelsea

Turning 30 this year, Sterling is one of the most experienced players in Mauricio Pochettino‘s squad.

Really, then, he needs to be one of the individuals on the pitch who takes responsibility and digs Chelsea out of whatever hole they find themselves in.

If the team were doing better, as an attacker, he probably would be finding things a bit easier. But the reality is that they are not, and he is the kind of player people will be expecting to change that, something Sterling has not been able to do unfortunately.
