While current Chelsea stars have had a tough start to life at Euro 2024, one who left on a free transfer recently has already put on one of the best performances so far this tournament.

N’golo Kante picked up the player of the match award for his performance in the heart of midfield for France, who started their tournament with a narrow 1-0 win.

While the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Mykhailo Mudryk endured rough openings to the campaign, Kante could not be placed in that bracket, wowing many in the process.

Keeping a pair of Real Madrid midfielders out the team straight after they won the Champions League is some achievement in itself, however that is exactly what happened last night.

Despite leaving Chelsea for free when his contract ran out, it looked yesterday as if he was back performing close to his best on the biggest stage.

One person who was clearly wowed by what he had seen was Ian Wright, who was providing punditry for the game.

Ian Wright stunned by Kante

He claimed to ITV Sport that he was stunned he could perform at that level despite now spending a season playing over in Saudi Arabia.

He said: “When you come and play to that level he must be doing something because if you’re playing in a league where the standard is not as good then how is he getting to that level?”

The midfield revolution at Stamford Bridge was certainly one that cost them a lot of money, potentially showing just how important the Frenchman was to the club.

Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo cost the club consecutive record fees, with both arguably not hitting their top level for long periods of last season.

The Ecuadorian in particular though had a very impressive end to the campaign, however this did come at a time where the World Cup winner was not available for selection due to having surgery on an ongoing injury issue.
