Hollywood star Hugh Jackman proved to be an unlucky charm as Wrexham were humbled by MK Dons in their return to the EFL.

The Australian actor was in attendance at the Racecourse Ground on Saturday as the Welsh side were beaten 5-3 at home.

Having been tipped as one of the favourites to be promoted from League Two, the Red Dragons were given a rude awakening.

Playing in their first fourth-tier match in 15 years, Phil Parkinson’s men were blown away by MK Dons.

There were two leagues separating the clubs last season, with Wrexham winning the National League, while the visitors dropped down from League One.

And it was the relegated side that put on a show for the spectators, as they led 2-1 going into the break thanks to an own goal from Eoghan O’Connell and a strike from Mohamed Eisa.

Jacob Mendy pulled a goal back for the hosts just before the break, but there was to be no heroic second half performance – despite two superheroes watching on.

Co-owner Ryan Reynolds and Jackman – stars in the upcoming Marvel film ‘Deadpool 3’ – were helpless as ex-West Brom starlet Jonathan Leko scored in the 51st and 64th minute.

Jordan Davies did score a late consolation strike in the 82nd minute, before Daniel Harvie restored MK Dons’ three-goal lead in the fourth minute of added time.

Anthony Forde then immediately hit back for Wrexham to bring an end to an enthralling encounter.

Wrexham’s late goals have ensured that Parkinson’s side will not be finishing the day at the bottom of the table.

Their National League rivals Notts County are rooted to 24th spot after the opening day of the League Two campaign after being thrashed 5-1 by Sutton.

The day started with so much optimism for Wrexham with Jackson taking to social media to express his delight at finally witnessing a match live.

Sharing pictures of him alongside Reynolds and his fellow Wrexham co-owner Rob McElhenney, Jackman tweeted: “Finally snagged an invite. Thanks Wrex.”

And football fans were quick to joke he won’t be allowed back anytime soon, as one Twitter user said: “Don’t think you’ll be invited again.”

Another posted: “Don’t think you’ll get another one based on the score.”
