England manager Gareth Southgate was at Stamford Bridge last night to watch Chelsea’s 3-2 win against Newcastle United.

He would have had an eye on Cole Palmer and Anthony Gordon, who have both impressed this season ahead of the Euros in the summer.

Before the game, Arsenal legend Ian Wright was asked on Sky Sports who he would take out of the two if there was one spot left.

It was a contrasting game for the two wide men. While Palmer scored a goal and grabbed an assist, Gordon had to be taken off in the first half because of injury.

After having a hand in two of Chelsea‘s goals, Palmer has now done something no other Premier League player has managed this season.

Ian Wright on Cole Palmer and Anthony Gordon

While Wright has been impressed with Palmer this term, the former striker says he would go for Gordon over the Chelsea man because of his pace.

Speaking before the Blues’ win yesterday, he said: “I’ve been very impressed with Cole Palmer, his emergence in the Chelsea side. I’d probably take Gordon.

“The only reason why is because I think the way Cole Palmer plays is not too dissimilar to Phil Foden in the way that they can play and what they can do. I feel that you need something else, a little bit more pace.”

Who should Gareth Southgate take to the Euros?

If it is a toss up between Palmer and Gordon, you can see why Southgate would choose the latter.

As Wright touched on, in tournament football, you probably want a fast and direct winger who can come off the bench and make an impact like Gordon.

That being said, Palmer’s numbers are simply too good for him to be left at home, while the 21-year-old has already played a couple of times for the Three Lions.

In total, Palmer has scored 13 goals and provided 11 assists for Chelsea this season. Potentially at the expense of Gordon or someone else, the former Manchester City man has to go to Germany in the summer.
