Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Sergio Rico has thanked fans for showing him love after a serious horse-riding accident that left him in intensive care.

The Spaniard had been in ICU since May after a horror accident out horse-riding.

While taking part in an annual pilgrimage in the El Rocio region of Spain, Rico was tramped by a horse that left him needing urgent medical attention.

It saw him put into a coma but he left intensive care on Wednesday, though is still recovering. The Spaniard took to social media to give fans an update on his condition.

In an Instagram story, he wrote: “I wanted to thank each and every one of the people who have shown me and sent their love in these difficult days.

“I keep working on my recovery, that is getting better every day.

“I feel very lucky. Once again, thank you all and I hope to see you soon.”

Rico has since been transferred to a ward in Seville, his hometown, where he continues to receive further treatment.

At the time of the incident in May, his family had said he suffered from “a serious mishap due to a mule cart and a horse that hit him”.

Fans were concerned for Rico’s condition when his wife gave an emotional update last month.

Alba Silva wrote on social media: “Don’t leave me alone my love because I swear I can’t, nor do I know how to live without you.”

However, he went on to wake from his coma and Silva went on post a further update of the two together in hospital with Rico conscious: “You and I, together, invincible.”

Rico is currently at PSG, where he acts as back-up keeper to Gianluigi Donnarumma.

In this country, the 29-year-old is best known for his time on loan at Fulham in 2018/19, where he made 29 appearances in the Premier League.

Rico came up through the Sevilla academy, where he was the club’s No. 1 from 2015 to 2018.

He was between the sticks when the Spanish side collected back-to-back Europa League trophies in 2015 and 2016.
