One Chelsea player is convinced that he can score more goals for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

Conor Gallagher has had his shooting boots on recently, netting in games against Leeds United, Crystal Palace and Aston Villa.

The midfielder has now stated in Chelsea’s latest matchday programme that he wants to score more goals and is confident that he has the ability to do so.

In a season where Chelsea have picked up nothing but injuries, Gallagher has been a very important player for Pochettino.

The 24-year-old has only missed one game under the Argentine. However, that number could go up tonight, with Gallagher a doubt for the visit of Newcastle United because of illness.

Now that he has got a taste of finding the back of the net, Gallagher is keen to do it more often for his boyhood club and thinks he can.

“It’s definitely felt like a bit of a breakthrough,” the Englishman said. “I’ve said it a number of times — I want to be a player that scores goals from midfield. I think I have the ability to do so, and I wasn’t able to do it so well earlier this season.

“That might be to do with luck, or to do with myself, but to score four goals in the last few games has been brilliant and fills me with more confidence to hopefully go on and get some more.

“I’ve been getting in the same positions all season, to be honest. It’s really small margins but if you look back at our games, I’ve very often been getting in the same positions from where I’ve scored those few goals lately.

“Thankfully, the boys have found me a few times and I’ve managed to score a few, but it’s all about consistency, continuing to do that and helping the team score more goals.”

Conor Gallagher can become a goalscoring midfielder

What Gallagher has shown over the last few weeks is that he is capable of getting into the right positions and then putting the ball away.

It is not something Chelsea fans saw often last season, but the England international did it quite well during his loan spell at Crystal Palace.

During the 2021/22 campaign, Gallagher scored eight goals in 34 Premier League appearances, which was a good return for a young midfielder.

Maybe he will never be Frank Lampard — there has not really been another midfielder like the Chelsea legend since his retirement — but Gallagher has shown on more than one occasion this season now that he can be a match-winner for the Blues.
