Manchester City sold Cole Palmer to Premier League rivals Chelsea last summer.

For some, that now looks to be a mistake, with Cole Palmer performing exceptionally well for Chelsea since arriving at the club.

In fact, this season, the 21-year-old has easily been one of the best attackers in the top flight.

In 23 matches, Palmer has scored 11 goals and provided eight assists.

It has now been claimed that Chelsea want the Englishman to be their poster boy. While City selling Palmer is now starting to look like a bit of an error, Graeme Souness thinks he knows why the club allowed him to go.

Graeme Souness on Manchester City’s decision to sell Cole Palmer to Chelsea

Souness has suggested that Pep Guardiola does not think Palmer is going to become a really top player, hence why he was allowed to join Chelsea last summer.

Speaking about the attacking midfielder’s move to Stamford Bridge on talkSPORT, the Liverpool legend said: “If you’re Pep Guardiola and Pep sanctioned a move, he said, ‘Yeah, we can sell him’, I think that maybe tells you… they may say to be kind to the boy, ‘We had to cash in because of financial fair play.’

“I don’t think he sells him, that’s the top and bottom of it. I don’t think you sell him. If you really, really think he’s going to be a top, top player, you don’t sell him.”

Can Cole Palmer become a really top player?

Based on what he has shown this season, yes. The England international already looks like one; it is just about consistency now.

In total, he has come up with 26 goal contributions for Chelsea, which is quite impressive.

According to WhoScored, Palmer makes 1.6 key passes per league game, which is the highest average in Mauricio Pochettino‘s squad. He is already Chelsea’s best player.

Whatever doubts Guardiola had — if he did have any — they must surely be gone now. If Palmer can maintain the form that he has displayed this term, then he will make it to the very top of the game.
