Manchester United’s interest in Mason Mount makes real sense with his former boss, Thomas Tuchel, calling him ‘the full package’.
The Chelsea star is on the verge of completing a move to Old Trafford this summer, leaving behind his boyhood club for a fresh challenge.
After one season in charge, Erik ten Hag is looking to build a team in his image, with the Dutch boss revealing one of the biggest things that he looks for in a new player during an interview last summer.
Speaking last August, Ten Hag said: “Of course you analyse your squad…what are the weaknesses, what are the strengths and where can we improve? Which players are on the market?
“But it’s also really important that you know the characters of your current squad and also the players that you bring in…what characters and behaviour they have. And what the effect, or probable effect, they will have in the dressing room.”
If Man United are looking for strong characters and humble players who are willing to learn, Mount may just tick all of the boxes.
The 24-year-old played under German boss Tuchel for 21 months during his reign at Stamford Bridge, proving himself as one of Chelsea’s most reliable performers at the time.
As well as his technical ability, Tuchel explained that it was much more about what was going on between the ears that made Mount such a good player to work with.
Speaking in May 2021, Tuchel said: “He has the full package. Mentally, in terms of talent and physically and the most important part is his character, he has his feet on the ground and he’s a nice guy.
“He comes to Cobham [Chelsea’s training ground] every day to learn something new and have new experiences.
“It’s a pleasure to have him, be at his side and guide him and support him. It’s impressive, he’s not affected by all the praise. This is maybe the most important part.
“He seems to be a guy who likes the sport, and feels an obligation to make the most out of it and he wants it absolutely badly, so it’s a top mix.”
