Mario Melchiot has made his prediction ahead of Sunday’s League Cup final between Chelsea and Liverpool.

Premier League giants Chelsea and Liverpool will face off for the Carabao Cup trophy this weekend.

Blues head coach Mauricio Pochettino will be hoping he can win his first piece of silverware as a manager in this country.

In contrast, this is Jurgen Klopp’s final season as Liverpool boss and he’s looking to bow out in style. This is the first of four trophies that the Merseyside giants could yet win this campaign to make it a fairy-tale ending.

Former Chelsea defender Mario Melchiot has predicted his old club to narrowly beat Liverpool this Sunday.

“Look, this is a final. On the day of a final it’s not always the team that is in the best form that wins,” Melchiot told the Sky Sports News channel (10:14am, 22 February).

“I have to say I think Chelsea maybe have the opportunity… Maybe that is the fan talking. I’ll go for 2-1.

“If it comes to penalties I’m a little worried so they have to get it [won] in the game.

“Liverpool is the favourite. I guarantee they have their chances. But Chelsea can squeeze a 2-1 victory.”

Elsewhere, speaking via BBC Sport this week, Chris Sutton has predicted a Liverpool victory over Chelsea.

Chelsea vs Liverpool

Liverpool’s focus after the weekend will shift to an FA Cup run, Premier League title race and Europa League competition. Therefore, it’s not all doom and gloom if they do come up short at Wembley Stadium.

Meanwhile, it feels massive for Chelsea and this project under Pochettino to lift the trophy in two days time.

The Blues are 10th in the league table and face a tough run to try drag themselves up the table into a respectable position. Admittedly, they’re one of the teams still in the FA Cup fifth round.

We’re concerned the campaign will go flat and fade out with a defeat on Sunday. However, a victory will give some vindication to the route we’re going in under these owners and should really lift the self belief in the dressing room.
