Marcus Rashford has set himself a target of 40 goals next season after detailing a chat with Wayne Rooney.

The England international had his best campaign for Manchester United last season which saw him score 30 times in all competitions.

That included a mesmeric run of form where he scored in nine consecutive games at Old Trafford, matching a 64-year record and beating Rooney’s record of six.

But Rashford has one eye on next season and wants to do even better – looking to score 40 times.

Speaking to Gary Neville on Sky Bet’s The Overlap, the 25-year-old set himself the audacious.

“Before last season, I always said let’s get to 20 – for a winger a good benchmark,” he added.

“But this season, I’ve hit 30 so we have to try and push it now and go above and beyond.

“Towards the end of the season, I was struggling with a few injuries, and I probably wasn’t quite at it – that’s when the goals started to dry up a little bit.

“If I can keep that side of it under taps, I feel like I can go on and get 35 or 40.”

If Rashford nets 40, he will become the first United player to do so since 2008.

In the 2007/08 season, Cristiano Ronaldo scored 42 times for the Red Devils as they went on to win the Premier League and Champions League. Ronaldo also scooped his first Ballon d’Or that year.

A similar campaign would underline him as one of the greats at Old Trafford while another icon spoke to Rashford recently about breaking the biggest record.

Neville asked the striker on his thoughts on breaking Rooney’s record as all-time highest goalscorer, which stands at 253.

“Hopefully I will,” he replied. “You never know what’s going to happen.

“But I’m all about scoring goals and trying to make assists. There’s definitely a chance that it can happen.

“I’ve actually spoken to Wazza about it – he wants me to do it.

“He said it would be good for me to do it as I’ve grown up at the club. Hopefully, I get the opportunity to try and make it happen.”

Rashford has some way to catch up and currently has 123.

United have two more friendlies this summer scheduled against Lens and Athletic Bilbao this weekend before their Premier League season gets underway against Wolves on Monday August 14, live on talkSPORT.
