Newcastle reportedly want to wrap up a deal to sign Leicester player James Maddison this week as they rival Tottenham for his signature.
The 26-year-old seems set to depart the King Power Stadium this summer following the Foxes’ relegation from the Premier League.
With Euro 2024 to take place at the end of the 2023/24 season, Maddison knows he may have to be playing at a high level if he wishes to be named in Gareth Southgate’s England squad.
Should he make the move to St James’ Park, he would be playing Champions League football for the first time in his career.
Whereas Spurs, who opened talks with Leicester earlier this month, cannot offer the midfielder any European action after they finished eighth in the recent campaign.
Valued at around £50million, Newcastle have made landing the ex-Norwich star their no.1 priority.
And according to Italian reporter Fabrizio Romano, the Magpies are aiming to find an agreement with Leicester by the end of the week.
Failure to do so could see the Toon outfit potentially pull out of the running it has been claimed, as they do not want to get involved in a long saga.
It has been said a decision will have to take place soon from Newcastle if they fail to make any breakthrough.
And this could see Tottenham swoop in as they are still pushing to bring him to north London.
Maddison has been with the England squad for their Euro 2024 qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia.
And whilst on international duty, he remained coy on his future, as he told Channel 4: “It’s a pause and put the blinkers on and focus on the job at hand.
“It was a tough end to the season, but the positive about the games with England after having a little bit of a break between the last game of the Premier League season and now, it was good to refocus on these games.
“If it was straight away it would have been more difficult.
“I am fully focused and raring to go.”
