Journalist Fabrizio Romano has told Chelsea fans their club will not need to spend a ridiculous fee to sign one player at the end of this season.

He told his substack for Caught Offside that the Blues will not need to offer the £100m Brentford reportedly wanted in January to sell Ivan Toney.

Toney was one of the names who was on the list of a number of top clubs as he approached his return to action following suspension.

He has made an instant impact with a couple of goals already under his belt.

Manager Thomas Frank came out recently and admitted it is pretty clear that his star player would be on the move this summer.

Romano has now added that the fee might not be quite so intimidating for a side like Chelsea this time around.

Toney won’t cost £100m

He said: “Another story that could be relevant for Chelsea, who want to sign a striker this summer, and also for Arsenal, is that Thomas Frank has spoken publicly about Ivan Toney being likely to leave at the end of this season.

“He’ll have just a year left on his contract, so his price tag will likely be lower than the £100m it would have cost to sign him in January.

“I think this situation makes sense and I don’t think clubs needed Frank to say that, it’s quite obvious and also one of the reasons why no one wanted to pay that amount of money in January. In the summer it will be different, for sure.”

Chelsea are reportedly prioritising the signing of a different striker this summer.

Victor Osimhen has been said by many to be at the top of the list for the club, although that deal will potentially set them back another club-record fee after talking with traditionally tough negotiators in Napoli.
