Chelsea defender Malo Gusto played a small role in his side’s opening goal against Newcastle United earlier.

It was his ball into the box that Newcastle could not clear properly before Cole Palmer’s shot was turned in by Nicolas Jackson to put Chelsea 1-0 up on the night.

Watching Malo Gusto get forward in the first half, Manchester United legend Gary Neville admitted that he really likes the right-back while commentating on the game for Sky Sports (11/03/2024 at 20:27).

The 20-year-old did not cover himself in glory for Newcastle’s equaliser, trying to flick the ball over the head of one of his opponents before Alexander Isak slotted past Djordje Petrovic. But other than that, he was pretty much faultless in the first 45 minutes of the match.

Chelsea signed Gusto from Lyon for £30.7m (BBC Sport). Former Blues defender Scott Minto also praised the French youngster recently.

Gary Neville really likes Malo Gusto

Speaking about Gusto during Chelsea’s Premier League clash with Newcastle, Neville said: “I really like Gusto. I think he’s done fantastically well. Yeah, very good.

“We know about Reece James and I think Gusto’s got to a point now whereby he’s playing at such a level… I think James has a better delivery, but Gusto’s playing at a seven, eight out of 10 every week.”

Malo Gusto deserves plaudits

As Gusto showed from the mistake he made against Newcastle, he is not the perfect player yet.

However, as the France international also showed with the part he played in Jackson’s goal, he is so dangerous going forward.

All of the praise that Gusto is getting right now, he definitely deserves it. And if he keeps playing how he has been since coming into the team for James, Mauricio Pochettino is going to have a big decision to make once his captain returns.

With the amount of issues Chelsea have had in the left-back position this season, it is a shame that the former Lyon man is not left-footed.
