Chelsea recently announced their latest financial results, which do not make for good reading.

Chelsea made a pre-tax loss of £90.1m for the 12-month period ending on 30 June 2023, as reported by The Athletic.

It looks like that could now affect their transfer plans for the summer, with the Daily Mirror claiming that the club could be prepared to miss out on Napoli’s Victor Osimhen to ensure that they comply with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules following that £90m loss.

Osimhen has been heavily linked with a move to Stamford Bridge, but the above could make a transfer difficult it seems.

The 25-year-old has been in fine form of late, recently scoring a hat-trick against Sassuolo, and was hailed as a “world-class striker” by AS Monaco’s Folarin Balogun last October.

Chelsea’s £90m loss could end Victor Osimhen pursuit

Chelsea’s latest financial figures suggest that there is not going to be another summer of heavy spending, or at least not without sacrificing several players.

It is bad news for any Chelsea fan who was hoping to see Osimhen arrive at Stamford Bridge in the next transfer window.

With the Nigerian having a £113m release clause in his contract, according to the Evening Standard, he could prove to be too expensive for the Blues.

You now have to question why the club have spent so much money on midfielders, for example, when it has been clear for a while now that they need an elite centre-forward.

Chelsea bought Romelu Lukaku back in 2021, but that deal has not worked out, while Kai Havertz and Timo Werner were not prolific during their time in west London. Yet the Blues would go on to spend heavily on Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia instead of a striker.

The above is not to say that they should not have strengthened their midfield. The club needed to after losing the likes of Jorginho and N’Golo Kante, for example. But it just feels like that centre-forward position has been neglected a bit.
