Chelsea goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic could have ended up at another Premier League club last summer.

Chelsea signed Djordje Petrovic from New England Revolution in a £14m deal (Sky Sports).

However, according to The Telegraph, the Blues had to see off competition from Nottingham Forest and Brentford to land the 24-year-old.

Petrovic was brought in to provide cover for Robert Sanchez, and he has had to do that following the Spaniard’s injury.

He has not disappointed, though, with Mauricio Pochettino describing his form as “fantastic”.

Chelsea will be glad they beat Nottingham Forest and Brentford to Djordje Petrovic’s signature

Chelsea will be pleased that they have signed Petrovic, especially after Sanchez’s injury.

The Serbian has not really let them down yet and will now have the chance to make himself a hero at the weekend.

The Blues, of course, face Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley. The game could go to penalties and if it does, Petrovic will have the opportunity to make himself a very popular man at Stamford Bridge should he feature.

Petrovic has already had to participate in a penalty shoot-out in the competition, with neither Chelsea nor Newcastle United able to score a winning goal in 120 minutes in the quarter-finals.

The Serbia international made a big save, keeping out Matt Ritchie‘s spot-kick to send his side into the semi-finals, where they beat Middlesbrough to set up a final against rivals Liverpool.

Pochettino’s men have not been good in the Premier League this season, sitting 10th in the table, so many will be tipping Liverpool to win this one.

However, Jurgen Klopp will not accept the label of “big favourites” amid the Reds’ injury crisis and Chelsea’s upturn in form.

After that, Chelsea take on Leeds United in the fifth round of the FA Cup. Whoever starts the game at Stamford Bridge next Wednesday could indicate who Pochettino now sees as his No.2.
