Chelsea’s defender is reportedly attracting loan interest this summer, but one possible suitor plans to wait until later in the transfer window before focusing on him.

Chelsea have become one of the best around when it comes to the loan system.

There’s numerous Blues players that have benefited from loan deals over the years, which have led to either permanent sales or first-team breakthroughs at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea-owned players such as Ian Maatsen, Omari Hutchinson and Andrey Santos all thrived during their experiences out on loan last season.

Leeds interest in Chelsea player will be a slow burner

The Yorkshire Evening Post claims that while Leeds United do hold an interest in signing Chelsea’s Alfie Gilchrist on loan next season, they won’t be moving to sign him imminently.

It is understood that Gilchrist, 20, is lower down on Leeds’ transfer shortlist for new defensive signings.

Apparently, if the Championship club tries to sign the Chelsea youngster this summer, it’s more likely to be later in the transfer window as it draws to a close.

The report adds that a ‘source’ close to Chelsea has expressed reservations over Gilchrist’s ability to become a key figure in the Leeds team at Elland Road.

Elsewhere, journalist Ben Jacobs said on the JUSTJOE FOOTBALL SHOW that Gilchrist would be open to a potential move to Leeds. He added there’s interest from Championship rivals Preston North End and Blackburn Rovers, too.

Ultimately, it’s vital that the Chelsea defender plays regularly wherever he ends up next season.

Alfie Gilchrist shouldn’t wait around

If Gilchrist is to go on loan next year, which would be his first spell away from Chelsea, then it would be great to get it wrapped up quickly to give him a full pre-season in a new environment.

The academy graduate, who can play right-back or centre-half, would be a great addition for any side in England’s second tier.

He coped extremely well when promoted into Chelsea’s first-team squad last season, playing 17 games across all competitions.

Described as “amazing” by Mauricio Pochettino via Chelsea’s website in April, Gilchrist is ready to take the next step in his career.
