Roma boss Jose Mourinho hit with four-match UEFA ban – Jose Mourinho has been issued a four-match ban by UEFA for abusing and confronting referee Anthony Taylor.

The punishment comes after the Roma boss vented his fury towards Taylor both during and after the Europa League final.

Roma boss Jose Mourinho hit with four-match UEFA ban for abusing referee Anthony Taylor in Europa League final

The Portuguese coach went on a foul-mouthed rant directed at the referee following Roma’s defeat against Sevilla on May 31.

Mourinho even followed the English official out into the car park after the match to further out his anger, branding him a “f***ing disgrace” and a “crook”.

And he also brought the game into disrepute, insinuating that Taylor “seemed Spanish” in a reference to Sevilla.

UEFA have not spared Mourinho, though, and have thrown the book at him by handing him a four-match ban.

However, it remains to be seen whether this is simply a pitchside ban or a stadium ban.

In addition to Mourinho’s ban, Roma have been slapped with a £43,000 fine and banned from selling tickets for their first Europa League game next season after fans threw objects during the final.

And they also were fined £4.3k due to ‘improper conduct’.

Roma lost the final to Sevilla after being defeated on penalties by four successful spot-kicks to one.

The match finished 1-1 after extra-time, but there were moments of controversy that marred the spectacle.

Throughout the contest, the game was dogged down by bad-tempered play and fouls throughout the 120 minutes.

But Roma and Mourinho were incensed by the decision not to award a penalty in the 81st minute when the ball appeared to hit Fernando on the hand.

There were a total 14 yellow cards brandished – the most ever in a Europa League match.

As the fallout continued over Taylor’s officiating, Italian fans barraged him and his family at the Budapest airport as they made their way home.

Roma qualified for the Europa League for next season after finishing sixth in Serie A, which will see Mourinho will miss a large chunk of their group-stage campaign.

But the ex-Tottenham boss might not even be around at the Stadio Olimpico anyway amid rumours over his future.

The 60-year-old made subtle references regarding his job at Roma before the final got underway.

“I have spoken to my captain before we came here,” Mourinho said last month.

“And they asked me the same question (whether I would leave).

“I won’t tell you, because that is between me and them.

“But there is a big difference between now and when I was at Inter because even though I hadn’t signed a contract with Real Madrid, everything was done.
