Former Chelsea player Eddie Newton has been speaking about some of the problems at his old club.

It has been another season for Chelsea to forget, with Mauricio Pochettino‘s side currently sitting ninth in the Premier League table.

It comes after a campaign where the Blues finished in 12th place.

They now look in real danger of missing out on European football again, which could have huge ramifications on Pochettino’s future.

HITC insider Graeme Bailey has already told The Chelsea Chronicle that there is an expectation that Pochettino will leave the club at the end of the season.

Eddie Newton on Chelsea’s main problem

Newton knows what it takes to be successful at Chelsea, winning honours at the club as a player and as a coach.

He recently spoke to talkSPORT about what Todd Boehly and Co have got wrong at Stamford Bridge.

Newton said: “The problem is that, for me, there are too many young players that have not got the experience to compete at this level on a consistent basis.

“The strategy I think they’ve gone for is almost like they’ve gone for a long-term strategy with a young squad in a competition that is all about short-term gain.”

Chelsea’s already inexperienced squad is about to become even more inexperienced.

Thiago Silva has confirmed that he is leaving the club at the end of the season.

The Brazilian has made just under 35 appearances in all competition this term, showing that he can still play at this level.

Really, then, Chelsea should have offered Silva a new contract, but for whatever reason that was not the route that they wanted to go down.

It leaves Axel Disasi, Trevoh Chalobah, Levi Colwill, Benoit Badiashile and Wesley Fofana as the Blues’ central defensive options for next season, while the club could always dip into the transfer market to sign someone to replace Silva.
