Chelsea will have to trigger the release clause of one attacker if they want to sign him this summer.

Conor Gallagher has been the man that Mauricio Pochettino has been using in the No.10 position this season.

However, the Argentine could be about to lose the midfielder.

It has been claimed that Newcastle United recently watched Gallagher, while the 24-year-old’s contract expires in 2025.

It means Chelsea may have to sell Gallagher to avoid the risk of losing him on a free transfer next summer, and there does appear to be interest in the Englishman.

Chelsea will have to trigger attacking midfielder’s release clause

If Gallagher does depart Stamford Bridge, then Chelsea will probably have to sign a new attacking midfielder, unless Pochettino plans on moving Cole Palmer to the No.10 position or changing formation.

Last month, FootballTransfers claimed that Chelsea had opened talks with RB Leipzig to sign Dani Olmo.

However, according to Fabrizio Romano, if the Blues or any other club want to land Olmo this summer, they are going to have to pay his €60m (£51.7m) release clause, as Leipzig are in no mood to negotiate.

In his column on Substack, the Italian journalist said: “Olmo could surely be one to watch this summer because there’s a release clause becoming active this year: €60m.

“This is the price for RB Leipzig — they have no intention to negotiate anything lower than that.”

Dani Olmo’s position

As already mentioned, Olmo is an attacking midfielder.

However, the Spaniard can also play on the right, so it could be possible to fit both him and Palmer into the same team.

Again, though, a lot could depend on what happens with Gallagher and whether Pochettino wants to stick with a 4-2-3-1 formation next season.

Right now, it does seem likely that Gallagher will leave Stamford Bridge in the summer, so someone like Olmo may very well be needed.
