Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana missed the whole of last season because of injury.

However, Wesley Fofana could be fit enough to feature at the beginning of the upcoming campaign.

Fofana has already been seen in Chelsea training ahead of the club’s pre-season tour in a major boost to Enzo Maresca.

And his teammates, including captain Reece James, look delighted to see him with a ball at his feet again.

Chelsea’s first game of the season is against Premier League champions Manchester City, though, so even if Fofana is fit, it may not be the right match to throw him into.

Chelsea players show Wesley Fofana love on Instagram

Fofana looks really excited about the new campaign, which is understandable after missing the entirety of the previous one.

The 23-year-old recently shared a post on Instagram with the caption “ready for next war”.

The likes of James, Malo Gusto and Noni Madueke all replied to the post, clearly happy to see their teammate training with the ball once more.

Fofana faces a bit of competition to get into Maresca’s starting XI this upcoming season.

He already had to compete against Axel Disasi, Benoit Badiashile, Levi Colwill and Trevoh Chalobah, but the club have now added Tosin Adarabioyo to their squad.

However, with Fofana being one of Chelsea’s most expensive signings of all time, you would expect him to get a proper chance after being out for so long. The owners are going to want to see a huge investment like that on the pitch.

Wesley Fofana and Reece James could form right side of Chelsea’s defence

Being club captain, you would also back James to be a starter under Maresca if he can stay fit.

It means the right side of Chelsea’s defence could consist of Fofana at right centre-back and James at right-back.

As for the other flank, Colwill starting at left centre-back and Marc Cucurella at left-back is also a possibility.

Maresca certainly does have options, so it will be interesting to see what he does on August 18, when the Premier League returns, and beyond.
