Mauricio Pochettino saw pressure quickly back on his shoulders yesterday after Chelsea’s underwhelming result against Sheffield United yesterday.

The Blues drew 2-2 with their relegation-threatened opponents away from home, with them failing to cling on to the good feelings that followed their sensational victory over Manchester United last week.

Pochettino’s emotion and passion looked to win over some Chelsea fans during the week, however that seemed to quickly divert away in the face of a poor result.

Pochettino makes questionable team selections

The Argentine made a number of decisions yesterday which supporters will have been left confused by, with him openly admitting that he was keen to see Cole Palmer in a new position during the game.

This is something that many will wonder what the need for it was, given the fact that he has been far and away their best player throughout this campaign.

Conor Gallagher was another player who featured in a different role, with his left-wing position clearly not utilising his strengths.

However, it was his comments after the game that will have been most frustrating for supporters who have been backing their team this season.

He said: “At 52-years-old, you identify really quick whether the team is ready to compete or not. Maybe this group is not mature enough to compete in games every three days.”

Given the fact that responsibility lies with Pochettino for developing his players, they will perhaps be frustrated that he feels he is not able to get the best out of the group when they are playing games in quick succession.

However, it will be the magnitude of the sides they have dropped points with when these comments have been made which will really annoy supporters.

In the last nine days, the Blues have thrown away leads against the bottom two sides in the Premier League to drop four points, and they would have seen them well amongst things as far as a European place are concerned.
