The BBC has confirmed hit drama Sherwood will be returning for a second series.

Filming for the next season of the popular show is set to begin this summer after it made its debut last year on BBC One.

Sherwood, which was written by James Graham, is about murder and a manhunt in a Nottinghamshire village still riven by the miners’ strike of the 1980s.

The story is loosely based on the murder of trade unionist Keith Frogson in 2004 and begins with the murder of a former union activist, Gary Jackson.

David Morrissey plays local police inspector Ian St Clair who reunites with rival Met inspector Kevin Salisbury to catch the killer.

The second series will be ‘navigating the devastating effect of two crimes on the community’ in Nottinghamshire.

The themes will allegedly be similar to those of the first series, but the story told through a modern-day lense.

Three-time BAFTA nominee Clio Barnard has been announced as lead director and EP on season two, replacing Lewis Arnold and Ben A. Williams.
