Christian Wilkins’ surprising career move: Socialite moves to LA to be ‘an actor or late-night TV host’ – as he talks ‘finding his identity’ as a queer person

He recently starred in the Stan Original series Eden and has also co-hosted major awards shows.

And Christian Wilkins is about to take another big step in his career by moving to Los Angeles to work on his acting and presenting prospects.

The socialite son of Channel Nine veteran Richard Wilkins told Who magazine he hopes to secure opportunities in Hollywood this year.

‘I just think there’s an opportunity to go there and see what might happen, and I’d love to try to explore that,’ said Christian, 27.

‘I’ve always wanted to be an actor or a late-night TV host. That would be a dream… so let’s try and manifest that and see if it happens.’

Elsewhere in the interview, Christian said he feels like he has finally ‘found my own identity within the queer community’ and is more confident.

‘As a little kid for Halloween, I would dress up as the Wicked Witch of the West and I loved that, but as I got older, a little part of that diminished because you get nervous as a teenager,’ he added.

‘As I made queer friends and found my own community, it became safe to explore my own identity through fashion.’

A lover of the limelight, Christian has stepped out of his father Richard’s shadow in recent years thanks to his growing catalogue of statement-making red carpet appearances.

Christian, who came out as gay in 2018, never shies away from bold colours, textures and patterns, pushing the envelope in terms of both style and gender stereotypes.

He also often wears gender-defying skirts and frocks.

‘People used to call me a girl all the time because I was a gay guy who was very flamboyant, and did dance and singing,’ he previously said on his podcast, Radical Fashionism.

‘People always used to call me a girl, and I always found that such a strange diss, because I feel like in order to be offended by something, what they’re calling you needs to be offensive.’
